Wahpeton, North Dakota

Wahpeton (/ˈwɑːpɪtən/ WAH-pit-ən) is a city in Richland County, in southeastern North Dakota, United States. It is located along the Bois de Sioux River at its confluence with the Otter Tail River, forming the Red River of the North. Wahpeton is the county seat of Richland County.[5] The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the city's 2015 population was 7,899.

Wahpeton was founded in 1869 and is the principal city of the Wahpeton Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Richland County, North Dakota and Wilkin County, Minnesota. Wahpeton's twin city is Breckenridge, Minnesota, located to the east on the other side of the river. The Bois de Sioux River and the Otter Tail River join at Wahpeton and Breckenridge to form the Red River of the North.

The first European explorer in the area was Jonathan Carver in 1767. He explored and mapped the Northwest at the request of Major Robert Rogers, commander of Fort Michilimackinac. This British fort at Mackinaw City, Michigan, protected the passage between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron of the Great Lakes. In 1763 the British had extended their reach in Canada after defeating the French in the Seven Years' War.

Zeeland

Zeeland (/ˈziːlənd/; Dutch pronunciation: [ˈzeːlɑnt] ( listen), Zeelandic: Zeêland [ˈzɪə̯lɑnt], historical English exonym Zealand) is the westernmost and least populous province of the Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country, consists of a number of islands and peninsulas (hence its name, meaning "Sealand") and a strip bordering Belgium. Its capital is Middelburg. Its area is about 2,930 square kilometres (1,130 sq mi), of which almost 1,140 square kilometres (440 sq mi) is water, and it has a population of about 380,000.

Large parts of Zeeland are below sea level. The last great flooding of the area was in 1953. Tourism is an important economic activity. In the summer, its beaches make it a popular destination for tourists, especially German tourists. In some areas, the population can be two to four times higher during the high summer season. The coat of arms of Zeeland shows a lion half-emerged from water, and the text luctor et emergo (Latin for "Ik worstel en kom boven" (I struggle and emerge)).[1] The country of New Zealand was named after Zeeland after it was sighted by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman.

Nehalennia is a mythological goddess of an ancient religion known around the province of Zeeland. Her worship dates back at least to the 2nd century BC,[2] and flourished in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.[2] She was possibly a regional god, either Celtic or pre-Germanic – but sources differ on the culture that first worshipped her. During the Roman era, her main function appeared to be the protection of travelers, especially seagoing travelers crossing the North Sea. Most of what is known about her mythology comes from the remains of carved stone offerings (votives) which have been dredged up from the Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt) since 1970. Two more Nehalennia offering stones have also been found in Cologne, Germany.[2]

Walhalla, North Dakota

Walhalla is a city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It sits on the banks of the Pembina River, five miles (8 km) from the border with Manitoba (Canada) and approximately 45 mi (72 km) from the border with Minnesota. The population was 996 at the 2010 census.[6]

Walhalla was established in 1845.[7] Walhalla is the second oldest town in North Dakota, its history bound up in the fur trade of the Red River Valley.[8] One mile northeast of town is the North West Company fur trading post, established in 1797 by David Thompson, and in 1801 moved to a site one mile east of Walhalla, where a reconstructed building is now located.

In town is the Kittson Trading Post, established by Norman Kittson, an American Fur Company agent, in 1843. This is the oldest building in North Dakota. It is located in the Walhalla State Historical Park and is preserved by the State Historical Society.[10]

Washburn, North Dakota

Washburn is a city in McLean County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of McLean County.[5] The population was 1,246 at the 2010 census.[6] Washburn was founded in 1882 and became the county seat in 1883. The city's name honors General Cadwallader C. Washburn.[7]

Washburn is home to the North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center which focuses on the Expedition's winter with the Mandans and houses a full-scale replication of Fort Mandan and one of the expedition's canoes.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,246 people, 551 households, and 369 families residing in the city. The population density was 692.2 inhabitants per square mile (267.3/km2). There were 661 housing units at an average density of 367.2 per square mile (141.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.0% White, 0.1% African American, 0.6% Native American, 0.5% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

Watford City, North Dakota

Watford City (Hidatsa: abaʔaruʔush),[5] founded in 1914, is a city in and the county seat of McKenzie County, North Dakota, United States.[6] The population was 1,744 at the 2010 census.[7] and the Census Bureau gave the 2015 estimated population as 6,708, making Watford City the twelfth largest city in North Dakota. Because Watford City is part of the Bakken field, the North Dakota oil boom has significantly increased population and construction since the 2010 census.[8]

In 1913, a few prospective businessmen located on the townsite of the future Watford City in anticipation of the arrival of the first Great Northern Railroad train. The Northern Land and Townsite Company, a division of the Great Northern, platted the town and sold lots in June 1914. Building began immediately, and many businesses and homes were moved from Schafer, which eventually became a ghost town. Watford was incorporated in June 1915, and was named by Dr. Vaughan G. Morris (1879–1940) for his hometown of Watford, Ontario.[9][10] A year later the town added "City" to its name to differentiate itself from Wolford in Pierce County.[11]

The Great Northern planned to extend its line to New Rockford and in 1914 began building the "Madson Grade," one of the longest dirt filled railroad grades in the country about a mile west of town. Two years later the grade was ninety feet high and nearly a mile long, but the project was abandoned shortly before the United States entered World War I.[9]

West Fargo, North Dakota

West Fargo is a city in Cass County, North Dakota, United States. It is, as of the 2016 Census Estimates, the fifth largest city in the state of North Dakota with a population estimated at 34,858,[6] and it is one of the state's fastest growing cities.[7] West Fargo was founded in 1926. The city is part of the Fargo-Moorhead, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.72 square miles (38.12 km2), of which, 14.44 square miles (37.40 km2) is land and 0.28 square miles (0.73 km2) is water.[2]

This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, West Fargo has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.[9]

Westhope, North Dakota

Westhope is a city in Bottineau County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 429 at the 2010 census.[5] Westhope was founded in 1903 along a Great Northern Railway branch line that began in Rugby. The name was based on the slogan "Hope of the West," created by Great Northern officials to promote prosperity for the new town.[6]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 429 people, 190 households, and 117 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,300.0 inhabitants per square mile (501.9/km2). There were 218 housing units at an average density of 660.6 per square mile (255.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.1% White, 1.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population.

There were 190 households of which 22.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.4% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.78.

Wildrose, North Dakota

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 110 people, 63 households, and 27 families residing in the city. The population density was 379.3 inhabitants per square mile (146.4/km2). There were 91 housing units at an average density of 313.8 per square mile (121.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.4% White, 2.7% Native American, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.5% of the population.

There were 63 households of which 14.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.5% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 57.1% were non-families. 47.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.75 and the average family size was 2.52.

The median age in the city was 52.6 years. 12.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 3.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 14.5% were from 25 to 44; 46.4% were from 45 to 64; and 22.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.1% male and 50.9% female.

Williston, North Dakota

Williston is a city in and the county seat of Williams County, North Dakota, United States.[5] The 2010 census[6] gave its population as 14,716, and the Census Bureau gave the 2015 estimated population as 26,977, making Williston the sixth-largest city in North Dakota. The North Dakota oil boom is largely responsible for the sharp increase in population.

Williston's newspapers, both in print and online, are the daily Williston Herald and the weekly The Williston Trader. Sloulin Field International Airport is a public airport 3.2 km (2.0 mi) north of the business district. Williston is the home of Williston State College and the Miss North Dakota Scholarship Pageant.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.56 square miles (19.58 km2), of which 7.50 square miles (19.42 km2) is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 km2) is water.[1]
